Dr. Marta Furlan is a Senior Fellow at Orion Policy Institute and Senior Program Manager for Research at Free the Slaves (FTS), a non-governmental organization working to end human trafficking and modern slavery. She is also a Fellow at the Center on Armed Groups. Furlan holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of St Andrews (Handa Center for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence), where she wrote her dissertation on armed groups’ governance practices in Yemen, Syria, and Iraq. Furlan is the author of Inside Salafi-Jihadist Governance: The Strategies and Characteristics of Islamist Insurgent Rule, published by Columbia University Press. She has also published in academic journals such as the Small Wars and Insurgencies, Middle East Journal, Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, and Civil Wars. Prior to joining FTS, Furlan worked as a consultant for a number of academic and humanitarian institutions, such as the Geneva Graduate Institute and Geneva Call.
